OMAHA — A woman was killed in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning at a Walmart in Omaha, Nebraska, after she allegedly kidnapped a 3-year-old child at knifepoint and cut him across the face. The child was taken to the hospital with a large laceration and is expected to recover.

Officers were called to the store, located on 72nd and Pine Street, around 9:13 a.m. local time after a person dialed 911 to report the incident. When officers arrived at approximately 9:20 a.m., they encountered the woman holding a knife to the child, who was in a shopping cart outside the Walmart, Omaha Deputy Police Chief Scott Gray said.

The child had been with a caretaker inside the store when the woman approached them and pulled out a large knife, Gray said. The woman took possession of the child and directed the caretaker to walk out of the store. She then followed the caretaker outside while keeping the knife held to the child.

Outside the store, the woman and the caretaker had a verbal exchange until police arrived. Officers issued commands to the suspect, but video showed the suspect swiping the knife at the child and cutting him across the face, according to Gray. At least one officer then fired their weapon. The suspect died at the scene.

No officers were injured during the shooting. The suspect's identity was not released. There was no indication that the woman knew the child or the caretaker, and it remained unclear why she had approached them, he said. He added that the woman may have shoplifted the knife from the store.

"Violence like this is unacceptable," a Walmart spokesperson said. The company said it is cooperating with police in their investigation.
