MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA — Google began rolling out a feature called Skills in the Chrome browser, allowing users to save and reuse Gemini prompts for repeated tasks. The rollout started today, with the feature available by default for all Chrome installations with the language set to U.S. English.

Skills are repeatable AI prompts that can be run in Chrome with a single click or keyboard shortcut. Alongside the feature, Google will include a Skills Library containing more than 50 preset prompts covering tasks such as summarizing YouTube videos, maximizing protein intake in recipes, and evaluating job listings. Users can add and edit prompts from the library.

To access Skills, users open the Gemini sidebar by clicking the Ask Gemini sparkle icon in the upper-right corner of Chrome. Saved Skills can then be retrieved by typing a forward slash in the sidebar or clicking the plus button. Clicking a saved Skill runs it in the current tab, and users can add additional tabs if the Skill pulls from multiple sources.

Additional examples of Skills include calculating protein macros for a recipe, generating side-by-side comparison tables from multiple tabs, and creating summaries of long documents or websites. The desktop version of Chrome remembers saved Skills across devices when the user is logged into a Google account.

Skills follow the same security rules as manually typed Gemini prompts. If a Skill involves adding a calendar entry or sending a message, Chrome requires the user to confirm before proceeding. Google worked with early testers to study how users save and recall Gemini prompts using the feature.

Google added Gemini in the Chrome sidebar as an always-present assistant earlier this year. The company has also experimented with generative AI controlling Chrome to perform browsing actions on a user's behalf but has since reassigned the development team to other projects. Users who do not want the feature can remove the Ask Gemini button by turning off the Gemini in Chrome toggle in the AI Innovations section of Chrome settings.

Chrome is not the only browser to offer reusable AI prompts. The Opera Neon browser includes a similar feature called Cards, which lets users save and reuse AI prompts or choose from preset options. Opera Neon's preset Cards include tools for prioritizing tasks, planning movie nights, and scheduling low-cost travel.
