NEW YORK — Television host Oprah Winfrey selected "Go Gentle" by Maria Semple as her latest Oprah's Book Club pick, announcing the choice on the CBS Mornings television program in New York. The comic novel was published in 2026.
"I learned so much about Stoicism — I laughed out loud for real. And underneath the humor there was always something tender … a quiet truth about relationships, identity, and what it means to find peace with yourself," Winfrey said.
The novel follows a protagonist named Adora, a divorced Stoic philosopher and single mother living in Manhattan. Adora meets a mysterious stranger and experiences a change in her life, finding herself caught up in events that challenge her capacity for acceptance.
Semple is best known as the author of the bestsellers "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" and "Today Will Be Different." An interview between Winfrey and Semple was taped for the Oprah Book Club Podcast and is available on Winfrey's YouTube channel.
