INDIO, CALIFORNIA — Singer Sabrina Carpenter headlined the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for the first time in her career on Friday, delivering an approximately 90-minute set that featured a surprise cameo by actress Susan Sarandon. The performance at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, transformed the stage into a replica of the Hollywood Hills nicknamed "Sabrinawood."

Sarandon appeared midway through the set in a theatrical segment staged like a nostalgic drive-in movie scene, playing an older version of Carpenter. She sat behind the wheel of a vintage car wearing a white outfit and blonde hair styled to resemble the singer. "Aunt Sabrina is happy, but she doesn't smile," Sarandon said during the segment, speaking as her character.

The set opened with a pre-taped short film in which actor Sam Elliott, playing a police officer, pulled Carpenter over at night and then let her go. Elliott told Carpenter in character, "You know it's not right out there. It's wrong." Actor Corey Fogelmanis appeared as a weary waiter in the drive-in theater segment. Actor Will Ferrell also made an appearance during the set as an electrician dragging a power cable across the stage. Actor Samuel L. Jackson lent his voice to a reworked moment during the song "Juno," saying, "Hello, Coachella … I am here to take you motherf—ers on this journey to relaxation."

Carpenter opened the show with "House Tour" and performed songs including "Espresso," "Please, Please, Please" and the live debut of "We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night." During "My Man on Willpower," she walked forward and backward on a treadmill in heeled boots. Dancers costumed as poodles and Dalmatians accompanied her on stage during "Manchild." During "Taste," Carpenter kicked her legs high while the crowd sang along.

At one point during the performance, Carpenter paused and addressed the audience. "I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you're doing?" she said. When the fan confirmed, she replied, "I don't like it."

Strong winds forced the cancellation of DJ Anyma's set after Carpenter's performance. "Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma's stage build, he is unable to perform tonight," the festival said. The National Weather Service said wind gusts were expected to reach around 25 miles per hour on Friday and issued an air quality advisory for the Coachella Valley from Friday afternoon until Sunday morning due to windblown dust. The agency warned, "Particle pollution can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems such as asthma attacks, heart and lung disease symptoms, and increased risk of lung infections." Indio was listed among potentially impacted areas, though the local air quality management district measured particle pollution levels as good to moderate since Thursday noon.

The festival draws more than 100,000 people daily over two weekends, according to the city of Indio police. Justin Bieber was scheduled to headline on Saturday and Karol G on Sunday, with the weekend lineup set to repeat the following weekend. Other Friday performers included KATSEYE, Disclosure, and Snoop Dogg.
