SAN DIEGO — NASA astronaut Christina Koch posted a video to Instagram on Sunday showing her returning to her San Diego home and reuniting with her dog Sadie after completing the Artemis II lunar flyby mission. Koch, one of the four Artemis II crew members, was seen in the footage entering her home for the first time since the crew splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego on Friday.

The Artemis II crew spent 10 days in space during the mission, traveling a total of 694,481 miles. The lunar flyby carried the crew to a greater distance from Earth than any previous human spaceflight, surpassing the record that had been held by the Apollo 13 mission since 1970. Koch flew on the mission alongside fellow crew members Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Jeremy Hansen.

In the video that Koch shared on Sunday, Sadie jumped at the door when Koch appeared at the window outside the home. Once Koch stepped inside the house, Sadie barked, wagged her tail frantically, and ran back and forth across the room as Koch greeted her. The Instagram post also included footage of Koch and Sadie running and jumping together on a beach and through ocean waves following the homecoming reunion.

"Sadie taught me everything I needed to know about being an emotional support animal. Didn't expect that would come in handy." Koch wrote in the caption that accompanied the video on her Instagram account.

NASA wrote that the science conducted during the Artemis II mission will provide data to support mission operations, train astronauts to apply well-informed judgment, and identify scientifically interesting areas for future Moon surface missions.
