UNION TOWNSHIP, NEW JERSEY — At least six people were shot at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in the 2300 block of Route 22 in Union Township, New Jersey, on Saturday night, leaving one person dead and five others hospitalized. The shooting began at approximately 8:40 p.m., and the local county prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the incident.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Five other people were transported to area hospitals, and their conditions were not immediately known, according to officials. As of Sunday, authorities had not released any details about a suspect, a possible motive, or any arrests in connection with the case.

Dozens of patrons scrambled to safety during the shooting, according to officials. A rideshare driver said he heard seven shots while completing a trip near the restaurant at the time of the incident.

Employees of the restaurant remained inside the building past 11 p.m. on Saturday night. Family members of the workers gathered outside and waited as investigators continued to process the scene.

The Gun Violence Archive listed the shooting as the 100th mass shooting documented in the U.S. this year as of Sunday. The organization defines mass shootings as cases in which four or more victims are wounded or killed, not including the shooter.

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill published a statement about the shooting on the social media platform X on Sunday. "My thoughts are with those who were injured in the shooting, and with their families." Sherrill posted.
