WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan called on Saturday for President Trump to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment, saying in a television interview that the president's remarks about destroying Iranian civilization posed a danger to lives and justified his removal from the presidency. Brennan, who served as head of the CIA during Barack Obama's presidency, said that Trump was too much of a liability to remain commander in chief.

"This person is clearly unhinged," Brennan said during the Saturday interview. "I think the 25th amendment was written with Donald Trump in mind."

The former CIA director's comments followed Trump's warning on April 7 that Iran's entire civilization would die that night if the Iranian regime failed to meet his ultimatum. Brennan said the president's warning hinted at the deployment of nuclear capabilities. He also said that Trump had immense firepower at his disposal, including the U.S. nuclear arsenal, and argued that the combination of those capabilities and the president's statements made Trump unfit for the position.

The 25th Amendment, which was added to the U.S. Constitution in 1967, allows the vice president and a majority of the cabinet to remove the president on the basis that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. More than 70 Democrats in Congress have separately called for the amendment to be invoked.

Brennan's remarks came on the same day that peace talks between the U.S. and Iran failed. Trump's statements regarding Iran and the possibility of military action against the country have been the subject of ongoing debate in Washington. The White House did not respond to a request for comment on Brennan's statements at the time of publication.
