MUMBAI — Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle died of multiple organ failure at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, a physician at the hospital said. She was 92.

Bhosle had been admitted to the hospital late on Saturday with a chest infection and exhaustion, according to a social media post by her granddaughter. Her son Anand Bhosle said her last rites will be performed on Monday. She is survived by a son and grandchildren.

Over a career spanning nearly eight decades, Bhosle recorded approximately 12,000 songs in styles ranging from ghazal, classical, bhangra and folk to cabaret and Western-influenced compositions. She won the Indian National Film Award for best female playback singer in 1981 for the song "Dil Cheez Kya Hai" from the film Umrao Jaan and again in 1987 for "Mera Kuchh Saaman" from the film Ijaazat. She received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2000.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media following her death. "Her unique musical journey spanning decades has enriched our cultural heritage and touched the hearts of countless people around the world," Modi wrote. "From soulful melodies to spirited compositions, her voice carried a timeless brilliance," he added.

Born Asha Mangeshkar on September 8, 1933, in Sangli in present-day Maharashtra, Bhosle was the daughter of classical singer and actor Dinanath Mangeshkar. After her father's death, the family moved to Bombay, now Mumbai, where she began singing professionally as a teenager. She eloped at age 16 with Ganpatrao Bhosle and took his surname. That marriage ended in separation in 1960. She married composer Rahul Dev Burman in 1980; Burman died in 1994.

Her voice reached audiences beyond India. In 1991, she collaborated with Boy George on the song "Bow Down Mister." In 1997, the British band Cornershop released "Brimful of Asha" as a tribute to her, and the track became a global chart success after a remix by Fatboy Slim. In 2002, she appeared with Michael Stipe on the song "The Way You Dream" for the 1 Giant Leap world music project, which was later featured in the film Bulletproof Monk. In 2005, she sang with the Kronos Quartet on the album "You've Stolen My Heart: Songs From R.D. Burman's Bollywood," and the same year, The Black Eyed Peas sampled her recordings in the song "Don't Phunk With My Heart." In 2026, she featured on the track "The Shadowy Light" on Gorillaz's album "The Mountain."
