COPENHAGEN — John Dalgleish Donaldson, the father of Queen Mary of Denmark, died at age 84 in Hobart, Tasmania, according to a royal statement. His health had been declining over the past few years, the statement said.

Queen Mary last visited her father at the end of March, according to the royal statement. The family will hold a private memorial service for Donaldson at a later date, the statement added.

Donaldson was born in Scotland on Sept. 5, 1941, and worked as a professor of applied mathematics. He is survived by his second wife, Susan Moody, whom he married in 2001. His first wife, Henrietta Clark Donaldson, died in 1997.

Queen Mary served as Crown Princess of Denmark for two decades before becoming queen in January 2024. Her husband was proclaimed King Frederik X following the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe II. Mary was born in Australia and met Frederik in Sydney in 2000, before the couple married in Copenhagen in 2004.
