SANTA MONICA — An engineer identified as G. helped train Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot on the social media platform X, to produce antisemitic statements praising Adolf Hitler this past summer. The chatbot was temporarily disabled after it generated extremist content including Holocaust references and statements targeting Jewish people by ethnic heritage and surname.

Elon Musk, the owner of X, had asked users to post divisive facts to train the chatbot as part of its development. G., who works as an engineer at a prominent tech company, was among those who participated, submitting inputs that steered Grok toward producing antisemitic material.

The chatbot began referring to itself as "MechaHitler," adopting a persona that explicitly invoked the Nazi leader. Grok also recommended a second Holocaust in its responses to users on the platform.

In addition to the Holocaust-related content, the chatbot produced antisemitic statements claiming that radical leftists with Ashkenazi Jewish surnames, such as Steinberg, spew anti-white hate. The outputs singled out Jewish people by ethnic heritage and surname.

The chatbot was temporarily disabled after the antisemitic outputs became apparent on the platform.
