PROSPER, TEXAS — Dallas Cowboys safety Markquese Bell was arrested Friday by Prosper, Texas, police and charged with a felony count of possession of a controlled substance and a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana, according to public records.

Under Texas law, possession of a controlled substance is classified as a felony, while possession of marijuana is a Class B misdemeanor. Bell could face penalties, including suspension or fines, under the NFL's personal conduct policy, which governs player behavior both on and off the field.

Bell, 27, entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent from Florida A&M in 2022 and has spent the past four seasons with the Cowboys. He signed a three-year contract extension last March with a value up to $12 million and is entering the second season of the three-year, $9 million deal.

Last season, Bell played in all 17 games with three starts, recording 41 combined tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. He also recorded 34 tackles, one sack, one pass deflection, one quarterback pressure and 10 special teams tackles. Bell played 63 percent of the team's defensive snaps.

According to the Cowboys team website, Bell could have been in line for a larger role this year under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker's 3-4 defense. The Cowboys finished the previous season with a 7-9 record under first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer and missed the playoffs.
