WASHINGTON, D.C. — Democrats in both the House of Representatives and the Senate plan to force roll call votes next week on a resolution to end U.S. military action in Iran and require congressional consent for any further military action. Congress is scheduled to return from recess next week.

Democrats in Congress previously attempted to pass a resolution to limit President Donald Trump's war powers in Iran, but Republicans blocked the proposal. The effort to bring the measure to a floor vote in both chambers comes as negotiations between the United States and Iran have continued.

President Trump has addressed the conflict directly. "A whole civilization will die," Trump said. The remark drew a response from members of both parties.

Senator Andy Kim criticized the president's handling of the situation. "We know that Trump is unfit to be commander in chief. He's dragged us into an unconstitutional, deeply unpopular and senseless war of choice, with no plan, no strategy about what happens next and how we get out of this. It's making your life more expensive and less safe," Kim said.

Congressman Burgess Owens offered a different view. "Iran has been allowed to inflict terror for too long," Owens said.

Neither House Speaker Mike Johnson nor Senate Leader John Thune has publicly commented on Trump's actions in Iran or the cease-fire. The resolution, if brought to a floor vote, would require a majority in both chambers to pass. Democrats have said the votes are intended to place members on the record regarding the use of military force against Iran without a formal congressional authorization. The War Powers Resolution requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to military action and prohibits forces from remaining for more than 60 days without congressional authorization or a declaration of war.
