This deployment marks the first time the Department of Justice has deployed election monitors in all 50 states. The Civil Rights Division is coordinating the monitoring effort.
Monitors include personnel from the Civil Rights Division, other Department of Justice components, U.S. Attorney’s Offices, and federal observers from the Office of Personnel Management. They will check for compliance with federal voting rights statutes within the jurisdiction of the Civil Rights Division.
Civil Rights Division personnel will maintain contact with state and local election officials throughout Election Day. The Department of Justice has sent election monitors since the enactment of the Voting Rights Act in 1965.
"Election integrity has been one of the top priorities for this Administration and this Division," said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon. "I am very proud we are deploying the largest monitoring effort in DOJ history, and pursuing transparency for elections in an assertive and nondiscriminatory manner," she said.
