DERBY — A 36-year-old man has been charged with six counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of attempted grievous bodily harm and one count of possession of a bladed article after a car struck pedestrians in central Derby on Saturday evening, sending seven people to hospital. Sandhu Ponnachan is scheduled to appear before a court in Derby on Wednesday to face the total of eight criminal charges, Derbyshire Constabulary said.

The incident took place at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday on Friar Gate, a night spot in central Derby. A car struck seven pedestrians on the street, and all seven were transported to hospital for treatment. Derby is a city of about 275,000 people northeast of Birmingham.

The seven people injured comprised four men and three women, ranging in age from 36 to 52 years old. Four of the seven have since been discharged from hospital.

Derbyshire police said Ponnachan has been charged with six counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, one count of attempted grievous bodily harm and one count of possession of a bladed article in connection with the Saturday evening incident on Friar Gate.

The force confirmed that counterterrorism officers assisted local police as part of the investigation into the Friar Gate incident. Derbyshire police added that counterterrorism assistance is common practice for this type of incident. The force also said investigators were keeping an open mind about the incident.

Ponnachan is scheduled to make his first appearance before a Derby court on Wednesday to answer the eight charges.
