WUHAN — Maja Chwalinska defeated Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the singles final of the Dongfeng Voyah Wuhan Open on Sunday to win her first career WTA Tour-level title. The victory placed Chwalinska in an elite group as the fourth player since the WTA 1000 format introduction in 2009 to win her first title at a WTA 1000 event.

Chwalinska, who was ranked No. 22 entering the tournament, is projected to reach a career-high ranking of No. 11 following the result. She received $665,000 and 1000 PIF WTA Ranking points for winning the tournament. Her opponent, Sonay Kartal, received $385,001 and 650 PIF WTA Ranking points as the runner-up.

The final match lasted 2 hours and 43 minutes. It was the first career meeting between Chwalinska and Kartal, and both were competing at the Wuhan Open for the first time. This marked the first Wuhan final between two players ranked outside of the Top 20.

Kartal, ranked No. 170 entering the tournament, became the lowest-ranked WTA 1000 finalist since the format's introduction in 2009. The previous record for lowest-ranked WTA 1000 finalist was held by No. 153 Svetlana Kuznetsova at the 2019 Cincinnati tournament. Kartal is projected to rise to No. 50 in the WTA Rankings following the tournament.

Chwalinska reached the final by defeating Mayar Sherif, Marie Bouzkova, Iva Jovic, Maria Sakkari, and Iga Swiatek. She defeated Swiatek in the semifinals on Saturday. Kartal defeated Anhelina Kalinina, Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini, Elina Svitolina, and Jelena Ostapenko to reach the final.

Chwalinska is the third Polish player to win a WTA 1000 title, joining Agnieszka Radwanska and Iga Swiatek. She is also the first left-handed player to win a WTA 1000 title since Petra Kvitova won the 2023 Miami title. Naomi Osaka (2018 Indian Wells), Bianca Andreescu (2019 Indian Wells), and Victoria Mboko (2025 Montreal) previously won their maiden titles at WTA 1000 events.

Chwalinska is the first player from Poland to reach the Wuhan final. Kartal is the first player from Great Britain to reach the Wuhan final and the second British player to reach a WTA 1000 final, joining Johanna Konta. Kartal had been on a six-month layoff due to a back injury prior to this tournament.

"It means a lot. It tastes very sweet, I [must] admit," Chwalinska said. "I feel like I still don't realize that I won. So I feel like I just need a few days. But it feels special because after the French Open it was obviously amazing, but then I had some tough moments. I feel like people also were very rough towards me. And it took a toll on me as well. I'm just a human. So I need to admit it was very tough for me, but I kept working really hard. And I'm just very grateful that my hard work paid off today."

Chwalinska was the runner-up at the 2026 Roland Garros, where she became the second qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open Era. She achieved a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 21 on 8 June 2026. Kartal achieved a career-high WTA singles ranking of No. 44 on 14 July 2025 and won the WTA 250 Monastir title in 2024.

What's New

Maja Chwalinska said, "I don't predict the future so I don't know what the future will bring. But I'm for sure very grateful for this place now. I started the season, I think, ranked like 140 and my goal was to be Top 100 this year. I think I did a pretty good job. And I'm very grateful for that. But I feel like there's so much more to improve in my game and in myself. So that keeps me working."
