MAZATLAN — A riot at the El Castillo Penitentiary in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, on Thursday killed 10 people and injured 16. Nine inmates and one family member died in the violence, which occurred during family visiting hours.

Sixteen prisoners were injured and taken for medical treatment. The deceased family member was a minor.

Army, National Guard, navy, and state security forces entered the prison to restore order. Mexico's federal security cabinet stated the prison is under control.

Authorities have not stated how the deaths occurred. Officials have not said whether the prison violence was linked to the cartel conflict.

Visits to the prison were suspended as a precaution. Social work staff are contacting the families of the dead.
