NEW YORK — Jaguar launched the Type 01 electric vehicle in New York on Tuesday night. The luxury automaker revealed the model with a starting price of £130,000 ($172,000) and confirmed that sales will begin in early 2027.
The Jaguar Type 01 will go on sale in early 2027, with first deliveries anticipated in the second half of the year. Orders for the vehicle will open at that time, according to reports. The company stated that the car is designed to provoke a strong reaction when parked.
Rawdon Glover, the managing director of Jaguar, described the target demographic for the new model. He said the person making this purchase would be choosing the car because it is a bold choice. He added that the Type 01 is aimed at a younger, richer audience than the manufacturer’s previous customer base.
Glover also addressed the financial strategy behind the launch. He said it is really important that Jaguar be put back on a more solid financial footing. A senior JLR executive said the intended public response to the vehicle is the type of car that causes observers to stop and question what they are seeing, describing it as the kind of car that when parked makes people stop and say: ‘Fucking hell, what have you just turned up in?’
The vehicle measures 5,235 mm long and 1,403 mm tall. It is more than 5.2 metres long and 2 metres wide. The design does not include a rear window and uses a rear-facing camera instead. The Type 01 features 23-inch wheels and has a drag coefficient of 0.23 Cd, making it the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever engineered.
Performance specifications include a tri-motor setup consisting of a 260-kilowatt front motor and twin 310-kW rear motors. The system produces 1,030 Pferdestärke (PS) and 1,365 Newton-meters of torque. This output exceeds 1,000 horsepower.
The car accelerates from standstill to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds. It accelerates from 62 to 112 mph in 4 seconds. The vehicle features all-wheel steering.
The Type 01 uses an 850-volt architecture and a 118-kilowatt-hour usable battery. Jaguar states the Type 01 can travel up to 400 miles on a single charge. The vehicle can add up to 200 miles of range in 13 minutes using 350 kW rapid DC charging.
Interior technology includes a 24-inch OLED screen for the driver and a 7-inch central touchscreen. The car offers 450 liters of load space, expanding to 1,000 liters with rear seats folded.
Jensen Huang, boss of Nvidia, rode in a prototype of the Jaguar Type 01. Jaguar built more than 150 prototypes and drove 700,000 miles during the development of the Type 01. The company filed more than 360 patents during the development process.
The Jaguar Type 01 will be built in Solihull using a dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA). Electric Drive Units (EDUs) and battery packs are made in Wolverhampton. Pressed body panels are manufactured in Halewood, Merseyside. The Jaguar Type 01 will not launch in China for a couple of years.
PB Balaji is the chief executive of Jaguar Land Rover. Jaguar Land Rover announced 4,000 job cuts to save £1.7bn over two years as part of its restructuring efforts. Jaguar Land Rover experienced a cyber-attack last year that cost the economy an estimated £1.9bn.
Jaguar Land Rover’s chief creative officer, Gerry McGovern, departed from his role following the chaotic launch of the Type 01. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has invested £11.5 billion in engineering, designing, and manufacturing its next-generation vehicles since announcing a £15-18 billion five-year investment program in 2024, with most of this investment spent in the UK.
Why It Matters
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds commented on the significance of the launch for the domestic industry. He said Jaguar’s new EV is a crucial step in JLR’s plans to invest over £15bn in the UK, and another big vote of confidence in the UK’s world-class automotive industry. The launch occurs as the company implements cost-saving measures and recovers from a cyber-incident.
