KIDAL — The Malian army entered the city of Kidal on Tuesday, supported by Russian fighters who participated in the operation to retake the strategic northern hub. The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) announced the withdrawal of its forces from Kidal on Tuesday, ending a period of control that began earlier this year.
A staff officer stated that government forces reached their objective sooner than anticipated. "We have just arrived in Kidal ahead of schedule," the officer said in an interview. The Malian military general staff stated it engaged in large-scale air-land operations in the Kidal region with Russian partners. The stated goals of the operations included neutralizing armed terrorist groups, destroying their sanctuaries, and restoring security and freedom of movement for the population.
The FLA described its departure as a calculated move rather than a defeat resulting from direct engagement. "This methodical withdrawal from the area took place without any direct combat having yet pitted its forces against the enemy," the group said in an official statement. "The FLA specifies that this is a temporary operational measure, also intended to preserve its human and logistical capabilities intact."
The FLA stated it had decided to carry out a controlled withdrawal from Kidal, citing recent air and ground operations by Mali's military supported by Russian fighters. Kidal is a strategically important city in northern Mali that has changed hands multiple times between government forces and separatist groups over the past few years.
The current conflict involves factions that have clashed repeatedly in recent years. In November 2023, the Malian army and Russian-backed fighters retook Kidal from the FLA and JNIM, only to lose it again in April 2026 during a major offensive by the same groups. The FLA and JNIM launched joint assaults starting in late April, capturing Kidal and killing Mali's defense minister, General Sadio Camara. Rebel forces briefly captured the town of Anefis in early July.
The Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) has been linked to multiple attacks on Malian military positions since its formation in 2024, including the capture of Kidal and the killing of the defense minister. Alghabass Ag Intalla, a Tuareg military commander, leads the coalition. The Azawad Liberation Front was founded on 30 November 2024.
Mali’s military has relied on Russian support for years, first through the Wagner Group and now through Africa Corps, a paramilitary group composed largely of former Wagner fighters. The Malian government expelled French forces and approximately 15,000 United Nations peacekeepers before turning to Russian paramilitaries for defense support. Mali has been ruled by the military following coups in 2020 and 2021.
Why It Matters
The recapture of Kidal represents a significant shift in a security crisis that has affected Mali since 2012, involving violence from Al-Qaeda and Islamic State-affiliated groups, criminal gangs, and separatists. Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) is an al-Qaeda-affiliated group that consolidated in 2017. The involvement of Russian fighters shows the continued reliance of the Malian state on external paramilitary support after expelling Western peacekeeping missions.
The FLA's description of the withdrawal as a temporary operational measure suggests the group intends to regroup rather than disband. This pattern of changing control over Kidal reflects the fragility of security gains in northern Mali. The death of Defense Minister General Sadio Camara in previous fighting illustrates the high stakes for the Malian government in these operations.
