SAN ANTONIO — A Drug Enforcement Administration-led task force targeting fentanyl distribution and related violent crime was launched in San Antonio on October 5, 2026. The initiative brings together federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to address overdose incidents in the city.

San Antonio Police Chief Jesse Salame said the department has responded to approximately 150 overdose calls per month this year. "This isn’t just about the overdose itself. It’s about getting to the people behind the drugs," Salame said. He added that the San Antonio Police Department will dedicate five detectives to the task force.

The targeted homes were within 1,000 feet of De Zavala Elementary School and less than a mile from Lanier High School. The three defendants face five to 40 years in federal prison if convicted.

Why It Matters

Homeland Security Task Forces are interagency law-enforcement entities established in 2025 to investigate and disrupt transnational criminal organizations, human-smuggling networks, cartel operations, weapons trafficking, money laundering, and related cross-border criminal activity. These forces combine federal, state, and local law-enforcement agencies to conduct intelligence-driven investigations and regional operations against complex criminal networks.

The framework has previously yielded significant seizures, including over 550 kilograms of methamphetamine in a February 2026 operation targeting transnational criminal organizations as part of Operation Take Back America. The current initiative in San Antonio applies this model to local fentanyl distribution, aiming to reduce the volume of overdose calls by targeting supply chains rather than only responding to medical emergencies.

Timeline

On October 1, 2026, search warrants were executed at three homes on the 1000 block of Torreon Street in San Antonio. Investigators found scales and baggies consistent with drug distribution at Alfredo Alejandro's home. That same day, Alejandro was charged with possessing methamphetamine, cocaine, a fentanyl-heroin mixture, a shotgun, and an AR-15 rifle.

Valerie Samaniego was charged with possessing fentanyl and a handgun, and Alejandro Reyes was charged with possessing fentanyl and heroin and making hand-to-hand drug sales outside his residence. Three people were federally charged with possession with intent to distribute narcotics following the searches.

What's New

Additional reporting indicates that San Antonio Police Chief Jesse Salame was appointed as acting police chief in July 2026 following the early retirement of longtime chief William McManus, positioning him as a key figure in the city's law enforcement leadership. The DEA-led task force includes collaboration with the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, expanding federal investigative resources to address local drug distribution and gang-related violence in San Antonio.

The DEA-led Overdose Task Force operates under the HSTF framework, leveraging federal, state, and local resources to trace overdoses to distribution networks, with a focus on connecting local drug sales to broader trafficking operations. The Homeland Security Task Force, under which the DEA-led overdose task force operates, was established by the Trump administration in 2025 as part of a broader initiative to coordinate investigations into transnational criminal organizations and drug trafficking networks.
