ST. LOUIS — Michael Goessling, a 59-year-old man from Missouri who was adopted as an infant, recently reunited with his biological father, five-time Grammy Award winner Michael McDonald. The musician expressed relief and gratitude regarding his son's well-being after decades of separation.
McDonald is the lead vocalist of the Doobie Brothers and has been married to singer Amy Holland since 1983. The couple has two adult children. McDonald is 74 years old.
Goessling's biological parents, McDonald and Diane, were both 14 years old when he was conceived. They placed him for adoption through Catholic Charities in 1967. The agency facilitated the placement of Goessling as an infant.
McDonald and Diane maintained a friendship after the adoption. They made previous attempts to contact Goessling via letter that he did not receive. Diane spent 30–35 years searching for him after placing him for adoption, according to a 2025 interview.
Goessling received a letter from his biological parents in May 2025 requesting contact. He met his biological mother in person on his 58th birthday. He spoke with McDonald on the phone for the first time the day after meeting his biological mother.
"I just said: 'What a voice that guy has!' it just sounded so familiar, but I couldn’t place it," he said. He described the initial conversation where he asked about McDonald's profession. "I said to Mike, ‘So hey, tell me, what do you do?’ And he said, ‘Well, I’m a musician.’ And I said, ‘That is awesome. I love music. I’ve always been a music nut,’" he said.
He recalled learning about McDonald joining the Doobie Brothers. "They told me, ‘No, they got a new singer. It’s Michael McDonald.’ And I was like, ‘Well, this is awesome.’ And I was just a fan from the get go," he said. He saw the Doobie Brothers in concert twice before learning McDonald was his biological father.
"Finally, I just said: ‘Are you Michael McDonald?’ And he chuckled and he said, ‘Yeah, I’m afraid so,’" he said. McDonald told him he had a show in St. Louis on Sept. 4, 2025. He met McDonald in person before the concert. McDonald performed at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater in St. Louis on Sept. 4, 2025.
"When he first saw me, he put his arms out, gave me a big old bear hug and told me he loved me, and I told him the same," he said. He described the experience as surreal. "There are still days I wake up, and my first thought is I am coming out of the craziest dream, and it’s been a year and a half. I’m still trying to get my head around all of it," he said.
McDonald reflected on the reunion and his past concerns. "We always talked about him. And it always came down to our greatest fear was, how did life treat him?" McDonald said. He acknowledged feelings of guilt regarding his ability to provide at the time of the adoption, a sentiment echoed in interviews with First Alert and KMOV.
He works supplying windows and doors for construction projects. He has two children, a 16-year-old son and a 13-year-old daughter. His wife is named Nicole. He plays guitar and sings but has never performed for an audience.

The reunion shows the role of DNA testing services in reconnecting families separated by adoption. His identification through 23andMe followed years of unsuccessful search efforts by his biological mother. The case illustrates how genetic genealogy can resolve long-standing questions about biological relatives.
McDonald's public acknowledgment of his son and praise for the adoptive parents reflects the complex emotions involved in such reunions. The story involves a high-profile musician and a private citizen, bringing attention to the experiences of adoptees and birth parents. The involvement of Catholic Charities points to the historical context of adoption practices in the United States.
