LOS ANGELES — Marvel Studios released a trailer for the limited series VisionQuest. The series is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on October 14.
VisionQuest will complete a trilogy begun with WandaVision and Agatha All Along. Paul Bettany returns as Vision in the new series. Ruaridh Mollica plays Thomas Shepherd, a character who was initially announced under the name Tucker in February 2025 before being revealed as a misdirection aligning with his comic book identity as Tommy Maximoff.
The official premise states that Vision has been in hiding after escaping those who sought to weaponize him. A bounty placed on Vision's head forces him to go on the run with Thomas Shepherd. In the series, Vision consults AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y. E.D.I.T.H. J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron. These AI personas are represented by human counterparts rather than just voices.
The trailer includes footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War. Vision watches flashes of Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision on a theater screen in the trailer. White Vision was constructed from the corpse of Vision's body last seen in WandaVision. White Vision was constructed using parts of the original Vision's body, along with artificial intelligences J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron, and the Mind Stone, but lacks the emotional intelligence and powers of his predecessor due to missing the Mind Stone.
Showrunner Terry Matalas compared White Vision's identity crisis in VisionQuest to Spock's journey in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, emphasizing themes of self-discovery and reconciling fragmented memories. Matalas serves as showrunner and a director for the series. VisionQuest is produced under the Marvel Television label. VisionQuest is part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, marking its placement in the broader MCU timeline alongside other Phase Six projects like The Marvels and Deadpool & Wolverine.
Why It Matters
The release of the trailer confirms the October 14 premiere date and establishes the series as the conclusion to a narrative arc that began with WandaVision and continued through Agatha All Along. The inclusion of James Spader as Ultron in a new human avatar form and the exploration of White Vision's construction from the original body and Mind Stone components connect the series directly to prior MCU events depicted in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War.
The confirmation of Thomas Shepherd as the reincarnated Tommy Maximoff, complete with superspeed abilities, ties the character's comic book origins to the on-screen narrative established in Agatha All Along. Showrunner Terry Matalas stated that the series focuses on White Vision's identity crisis and self-discovery, positioning the show within Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside other major releases.
What's New
In Marvel Comics, Thomas Shepherd is established as the reincarnated form of Wanda and Vision's son Tommy Maximoff, who takes the superhero alias 'Speed' and possesses superspeed abilities, a trait confirmed in the VisionQuest trailer. Thomas Shepherd displays super speed abilities in the trailer.
The trailer for VisionQuest includes references to Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers: Infinity War, with footage of Vision watching these films on a theater screen, signaling narrative connections to earlier MCU events. James Spader's return as Ultron in VisionQuest includes a human avatar form, a departure from his 2015 film portrayal, allowing for direct interaction with White Vision in both digital and physical realms. Ruaridh Mollica's character, Thomas Shepherd, was initially announced under the name 'Tucker' in February 2025, but the name was later revealed to be a misdirection, aligning with his comic book identity as Tommy Maximoff.
