NEW YORK — Amazon announced it will impose a temporary 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge on third-party sellers using its platform, effective April 17, 2026. The surcharge will apply to sellers in the United States and Canada who use Fulfillment by Amazon.

Starting May 2, 2026, the surcharge will extend to sellers using the Buy with Prime and Multi-Channel Fulfillment options. Amazon said in a message to sellers that the new surcharge is intended to cover a portion of the increased fuel and logistics costs it is experiencing.

In an emailed statement, the company said it has absorbed increased fuel and logistics costs so far but implements temporary surcharges when costs remain elevated to partially recover those costs. "Elevated costs in fuel and logistics have increased the cost of operating across the industry," the statement read.

Amazon said the charge is meaningfully lower than those applied by other major carriers. "We remain committed to our selling partners' success and to maintaining broad selection and low prices for customers," the company wrote in the emailed statement. Amazon did not specify an end date for the surcharge beyond describing it as temporary.

The surcharge arrives as other major shipping carriers have also raised their fuel-related fees. United Parcel Service and FedEx have both increased their fuel surcharges. The United States Postal Service announced it would impose an 8% fuel surcharge on packages shipped starting April 26, 2026, with the fee remaining in place until January 17, 2027.

Oil prices have increased sharply since the United States and Israel began a war with Iran in late February 2026. The conflict has interrupted crude shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.

Amazon's Fulfillment by Amazon program allows third-party sellers to store inventory in Amazon warehouses, with the company handling shipping, returns, and customer service on their behalf. The Buy with Prime program enables sellers to offer Prime shipping benefits on their own websites, while Multi-Channel Fulfillment allows sellers to use Amazon's logistics network to ship orders placed through other sales channels.
