BLANTYRE — Malawian police rescued Nusrat Osman, a 47-year-old British national, following a shootout that killed four suspected kidnappers in Blantyre. The operation concluded with Osman safe and reunited with her family after authorities exchanged gunfire with the abductors.

Nusrat Osman was abducted outside her home in Blantyre on 11 September at approximately 12:30 local time. The suspects used a grey Nissan Dualis to carry out the abduction, according to police records of the incident.

The Malawi Police Service confirmed that four suspected kidnappers were shot dead during the exchange of fire with officers in Mpemba around Chadzunda. This area is located within Blantyre, where the rescue operation took place to free the British national who had been taken from Mount Pleasant.

Deputy Inspector General Mlowoka Noel Kayira was shot and wounded during the operation. He is currently in stable condition and receiving medical attention for the injuries sustained while engaging the armed suspects.

Osman's husband is named Nazil Osman. In an interview, he expressed confusion regarding the motive behind the abduction. "I don’t know where she is or how she is. My wife is an auditor, and I have no issues with anyone," said Nazil Osman, Osman's husband.

Osman's brother is named Shobi Jiwa. He praised Osman's husband for his actions during the crisis. "He is the hero of our family. He’s the hero of the country," said Shobi Jiwa, Osman's brother.

"He’s the hero of the world, actually, for putting his life at risk and taking a bullet into himself for my sister." Malawian police announced Osman’s rescue in a statement late on Thursday. The statement confirmed the death of the four suspects and the safe recovery of the victim.

Police stated that the motive for the abduction was unknown. The suspects had not contacted Osman's family or authorities to demand a ransom prior to the rescue operation.
