HOLBORN AND ST PANCRAS — Labour members held a selection meeting at St Pancras church in Euston on Wednesday night, where Abdi-Wali was chosen from a field of 96 applicants.

Abdi-Wali is the leader of Camden council, having been elected to that role in May. She was first elected as a Labour councillor in 2022 and previously served as chair of the local constituency Labour party.

The 42-year-old candidate arrived in the UK from Somalia as a child in the 1990s. She has worked for more than a decade as a volunteer and trustee for local charities and is a governor of two schools in Camden borough.

"This place welcomed my family as refugees and gave us hope when we needed it most," Abdi-Wali said in a statement. "I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to build a life here, serving our community as a councillor, school governor and community activist."

Zia Yusuf, Reform UK’s home affairs spokesperson, posted on X that Abdi-Wali was born in Somalia. Labour described the social media post as "straightforward racism".

Keir Starmer represented the Holborn and St Pancras seat from 2015 until his recent departure. His majority in the last election decreased from nearly 28,000 to 11,500, a fall of 58.9 percent.

Andrew Feinstein, a leftwing independent, was Starmer's main competitor in the last election but has confirmed he will not stand in the byelection. The Greens finished third in the last election in Holborn and St Pancras.
