Meloni's administration surpassed the previous record for longest uninterrupted government set by Silvio Berlusconi between 2001 and 2005. Silvio Berlusconi resigned briefly in 2005 due to a government crisis before forming a new Cabinet. None of Italy's 68 governments in the country's 80 years as a republic has completed a five-year term without interruption.

Giorgia Meloni took office as Italy's first female prime minister in October 2022. Her government was the first led by a party with neo-fascist roots. Meloni has kept the same coalition in place since taking office in October 2022. Meloni has maintained support for Ukraine following Russia's full-scale invasion.

Meloni and her party will hold a pre-election rally in Bari on Friday to celebrate the milestone. The official slogan for the celebration is 'Il Governo più stabile, l'Italia più forte' (the most stable government, the strongest Italy). Supporters of Meloni cite tighter public finances, the rollback of costly measures, more than 1 million additional jobs, and unemployment below 6% as achievements.

Meloni stated that her government created 1.2 million stable jobs and brought overall and youth unemployment to historic lows. "We have reached a record high in employment," she said. "The government’s strategy has focused on supporting those who create wealth and jobs." She added, "Italy doesn’t beg." Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto praised the Prime Minister's dedication.

"Meloni has reaped a part of what she sowed, because I know few people so determined, so hardworking, so precise, so meticulous, who have sacrificed both their human and private spheres in order to serve the institutions," Crosetto said. He added, "For this she is now reaping exactly what she deserves in terms of international credibility." However, he noted, "She is not reaping the same on the Italian level." Crosetto also stated, "Duration is not synonymous with results, but these are important ones." Political Analyst and Pollster Lorenzo Pregliasco offered a different view. "The Meloni government has been certainly stable and long-running, but it hasn’t achieved much in terms of structural reforms," Pregliasco said.

Retired army General Roberto Vannacci has launched a political party called Futuro Nazionale. "This moment will be written in the history books," said Michele Picaro, Member of the European Parliament. Picaro added, "We are the longest government in the history of the Italian Republic and this must be celebrated." He also said, "This is a government that is more used to working than looking at percentages." Lia Quartapelle, Member of Parliament, criticized the administration's domestic record.

"This government has wasted the huge occasion that stability gave them," Quartapelle said. She added, "Meloni hasn’t really done much at home but has been very present abroad."

The record duration of the Meloni government shows a shift in Italian political stability, yet it prompts discussion about the translation of longevity into domestic satisfaction. Italy's next general election is due by the end of 2027. Critics argue that core economic issues remain unaddressed despite the government's tenure.

A new political force led by Vannacci is capitalizing on voter fatigue with a foreign policy focus, promoting a nationalist and socially conservative agenda. Retired army General Vannacci founded his own political party, National Future, in February 2026. Futuro Nazionale has risen to about 8% in opinion polls.

Vannacci's rise presents a contrast to Meloni's internationalist approach. Vannacci self-published a book in 2023 containing racism, homophobia, Islamophobia, and antisemitism. Vannacci lost his army job following the backlash to his book.

Vannacci was elected as a Member of the European Parliament for the League party in 2024. Futuro Nazionale's manifesto states that abortion is not a right. The manifesto calls for banning gay people from TV between 6am and 11pm. It proposes introducing military education in high schools. Futuro Nazionale proposes a 'remigration' plan to remove irregular immigrants and foreign nationals who commit crimes. Vannacci has campaigned to stop weapons and financial aid to Ukraine. Vannacci organized a 'Futuristic Triathlon' in Sanremo in July.
