MIDDLESBROUGH — Cleveland Police launched a murder investigation after a deliberate house fire in the Grangetown area of Middlesbrough killed two people, including a seven-year-old girl, and injured three others. The force arrested two men aged 23 and 31 on suspicion of murder in connection with the blaze.

Police were called at 5.23am to reports of a house fire in the Grangetown area of Middlesbrough. Two people died in the fire and a woman was in hospital in Newcastle in a critical condition. Three people sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were receiving treatment in hospital.

The victims of the house fire have been named as Natalie McDonald and her niece Valentina Foster. Natalie McDonald was 34 years old. Valentina Foster was seven years old. Police believe the house fire was started deliberately.

Cleveland Fire Brigade sent six fire engines and an incident command unit to the scene of the Grangetown blaze. Road closures were in place in the surrounding area of the Grangetown blaze. Cleveland Police confirmed the fire was called in at 05:23 BST on 26 August 2026, and the investigation was ongoing with a high visibility presence in the Grangetown area.

Superintendent Emily Harrison, Redcar and Cleveland Local Policing Commander, stated the force was working to establish the circumstances of the incident and was keeping an open mind about links to wider organized crime. "We are working to establish the circumstances of exactly what has happened, but we are keeping an open mind and cannot rule out any links to wider organised crime at this time," Harrison said.

The escalating violence in Middlesbrough is thought to be linked to a gangland war between two factions of a local organized crime group in the town. Cleveland Police is a territorial police force responsible for policing the boroughs of Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, Hartlepool, and Stockton-on-Tees in North East England. Since 2025, the chief constable of Cleveland Police has been Victoria Fuller.

Five MPs on Teesside called on the government to provide more help to local police and fire services. The five Labour Teesside MPs are Andy McDonald, Chris McDonald, Luke Myer, Jonathan Brash, and Anna Turley. Andy McDonald is the Labour MP for Middlesbrough and Thornaby East.

Chris McDonald is the Labour MP for Stockton North. Luke Myer is the Labour MP for Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland. Jonathan Brash is the Labour MP for Hartlepool. Anna Turley is the Labour MP for Redcar.

"Gangs and the drugs trade were clearly featuring in a series of incidents in the area," McDonald said. "We do suffer those metropolitan levels of crime, and yet comparatively our funding looks much more like a rural area, and it simply cannot continue like that." McDonald said resources must be put where demand is highest, which is Cleveland, and that is the message to ministers.

PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough died in a head-on collision between their police car and a vehicle going the wrong way on the A66 near Middlesbrough early on 22 August. At this stage it is understood there had been a police pursuit of the Volkswagen Passat. The Passat entered the A66 carriageway against the flow of traffic, at which stage the pursuit was aborted. A short time after the pursuit was aborted, the Volkswagen Passat collided with a police vehicle which had not been directly involved in the prior pursuit.

There was a minute's applause ahead of Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion's Championship match at Riverside Stadium, as pictures of the two men were displayed on a screen. Hartlepool United held a two-minute silence before their home National League game against Eastleigh on Friday evening. People gathered to pay tribute at Seaton Carew FC's game against FC Hartlepool. PC Matthew Blades had been a junior football coach at both Seaton Carew FC and FC Hartlepool.

Middlesbrough FC released a statement regarding the officers. "We are also showing our appreciation for the dedication and hard work of both men, and to Cleveland Police force in protecting and supporting our local community," the statement read. "The commitment shown by officers and staff, often in challenging and demanding circumstances, plays a vital role in keeping residents safe and helping people feel secure in their homes, neighbourhoods and local areas." Police released details about a report of a vehicle crashing into a wall at an empty property in South Bank in the early hours of Thursday. Police released details about an assault with a bladed weapon in Eston at midday on Thursday.
