BOISE, IDAHO — Love met most of the victims through online dating applications. The scheme targeted women in California, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. According to the FBI, there are additional victims beyond the 26 identified women.
To support his false identity, Love posted content on Instagram portraying himself as an undrafted NFL wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers. He allegedly claimed in social media videos that he was injured to explain why he was not playing football. Love also allegedly filmed himself signing a fabricated NFL contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Representatives for the NFL and the San Francisco 49ers stated that Love never worked for either organization.
Love used aliases including Jon Love, Daejon Love, Avril Lyto Love, and Jordan Love during the scheme. He allegedly pretended to be a relative of Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love to defraud at least one victim. Love also allegedly used a video touting friendships with NFL players Tyreek Hill, Antonio Brown, and John Brown to gain victims' trust.
"The scheme relied on Love's creation of fictitious personas and display of a lavish lifestyle which Love presented to victims both in person and on social media websites," the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon said. "Love convinced many of the victims they were in sincere romantic relationships with Love, that he was a sophisticated investor, and that Chan was his investment adviser who helped Love grow a fortune worth tens of millions of dollars."
Love and Chan conducted three-way FaceTime calls with victims to display falsified investment gains. When victims lacked funds to invest, Love sometimes instructed them to take out personal loans. "Victims sent Love and Chan money due to their belief that their money would be invested in legitimate investment vehicles on the victims' behalf," the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.
None of the identified victims interviewed by investigators reported receiving investment returns or repayments. Love blocked communication with victims who ran out of money or asked questions about the investments.
Why It Matters
The case illustrates the scale of romance scams that combine false professional identities with fabricated investment opportunities. Federal authorities allege the defendants targeted women across multiple states, resulting in financial losses for at least 26 identified victims. The FBI believes additional victims exist, suggesting the total impact may be greater than currently documented.
The use of social media, fake contracts, and forged financial records demonstrates how digital tools can facilitate complex fraud schemes. The involvement of fake NFL personas and alleged investment algorithms shows how scammers exploit public interest in sports and finance to build trust. The upcoming court proceedings will address the charges of wire fraud conspiracy against both defendants.
