WEST HARRIS COUNTY — A 4-year-old girl died after accidentally shooting herself in northwest Harris County. Precinct 4 deputies responded to a home in the 8700 block of Champions Plaza around 11 p.m. on August 27.

Deputies found the girl suffering from a gunshot wound inside a closet. Emergency medical crews transported the girl to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the handgun belonged to the girl's mother. The mother told deputies she kept the gun inside the closet.

Sergeant Jason Brown provided details regarding the storage of the weapon. "The firearm does belong to the mother. She owned the firearm, and she indicated it was inside the closet. That's where it was stored at," Brown said.

"That's how the child ended up finding it." Brown outlined the scope of the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances of the incident. "We are in the process of interviewing the mother and the 10-year-old child who was home at the time, trying to determine exactly how the child got in the closet -- you know, how this happened, as far as how the child found the firearm. But as of right now, we believe it's going to be accidental," he said.

Investigators believe the shooting was accidental. The mother has not been taken into custody.
