Investigators searched Taele's residence in Downey, California, on August 3, 2026. They discovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle at the residence. The barrel of the short-barreled rifle possessed by Taele had been cut from 14 inches to 10 inches.

Taele is charged in federal court with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle. The felony charge carries a statutory maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

Bill Essayli, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, commented on the apprehension. "While we are still investigating the motives of this individual, we are thankful he was apprehended before the president’s visit," Essayli said.

"Federal and local law enforcement stepped in early and prevented what could have been a dangerous situation from occurring," Essayli said. "Anyone with that amount of firepower around the President poses a serious threat." He added that the investigation remains ongoing.
