FAGERSTA — Police launched a major investigation into the attack at Brinell School in Fagersta, Sweden, on August 21, 2026, conducting house searches, reviewing camera footage and interviewing witnesses. Authorities confirmed the 18-year-old suspect acted alone and was not injured during his arrest after carrying out the assault with a sword.

The case is being investigated as murder and attempted murder following an incident that killed one person and wounded three others. The victim of the attack was a 17-year-old girl, while three other people were wounded in the attack, two of them severely.

The two seriously injured victims were boys aged 12 and 17, and one of the seriously injured victims required emergency surgery. A third person, also under 18, was slightly injured and has been discharged from a hospital.

Police received an alarm regarding the incident in the early afternoon on Friday, and officers were called to the scene just after 14:00 local time. The attack occurred while classes were in session at the school, which has about 400 to 500 students.

During the operation to arrest the suspect, police fired shots, but the attacker was not hit by police gunfire. The suspect is being held in custody and is not being treated in a hospital.

Investigators carried out two house searches in connection with the suspect as part of the preliminary investigation. Police are reviewing camera footage for the preliminary investigation, and many witnesses are expected to be interviewed as part of the investigation.

Police stated they have no reason to believe there were multiple perpetrators. "That's why we can't give out too much information, because we don't want to influence witnesses," Police Chief Tommy Alriksson said.

The school principal stated that the attacker was a student at the school. Police are investigating a TikTok account belonging to the suspect which contained several videos referencing school attacks and a photo of a sword.

Roadblocks were set up around the school, and eight other schools in the area were placed under lockdown measures. The Fagersta city government set up a crisis center in a sports hall near the school to assist those affected.

The Vastmanland region went into a state of emergency on Friday, which ended by Saturday. Around 70 people gathered at a memorial site prepared by the municipality on Saturday morning, carrying flowers and lighting candles.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson visited the site on Saturday, joined by Magdalena Andersson, leader of the Social Democrats. Political parties suspended campaign events on Saturday, and Kristersson invited all party leaders to a meeting to discuss the progress of the investigation.

Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer stated the government is in close contact with the police. "We have been informed of a serious incident in Fagersta. The police are on site and are working very intensively on the incident," Strommer said. Kristersson posted on X: "We do not yet know what lies behind the act, but we know that the police are working very intensively." He also posted: "Our thoughts are with all those affected."

Why It Matters

The attack at Brinell School marks another violent incident at a Swedish educational institution, following previous assaults in Malmo, Trollhattan and Örebro. The response involved a regional state of emergency and the suspension of political campaign events, reflecting the scale of the shock to the community and the nation.

The investigation focuses on determining the motive behind the act, with authorities examining digital evidence including social media content. The confirmation that the suspect acted alone allows police to focus resources on understanding the individual's background and planning rather than searching for additional accomplices.
