FORT STEWART, GEORGIA — The U.S. Army’s 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion is offering a special four-day pass to soldiers who sign reenlistment contracts between Aug. 1 and Nov. 14, 2026.

The incentive is timed to coincide with the Nov. 19, 2026 release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI.

Twenty of the 130 eligible soldiers in the battalion have accepted the reenlistment incentive as of Monday. To qualify for the pass, soldiers must reenlist for a minimum of two years and up to six years of additional service.

A career counselor for the battalion proposed the incentive program to unit leadership. Lt. Col. Ryan Hodgson serves as the commander of the 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion, which is located at Fort Stewart.

"This special pass is specifically designed to coincide with the highly anticipated release of the video game Grand Theft Auto VI," Hodgson said. The battalion is part of the 3rd Infantry Division, according to organizational records.

Lt. Col. Angel Tomko is a spokesperson for the 3rd Infantry Division. "The idea was to have a unique incentives program that connects to what soldiers are interested in," Tomko said.

Grand Theft Auto VI is developed by Rockstar Games and published by Take-Two Interactive. Strauss Zelnick is the CEO of Take-Two Interactive. Preorders for the title are priced at $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the ultimate version. Zelnick described preorders for Grand Theft Auto VI as "unprecedented and astonishing." Why It Matters

The alignment of military retention incentives with major cultural events reflects a strategy to connect with soldier interests. The 9th Brigade Engineer Battalion structured the four-day pass to match the release of a high-profile video game, aiming to increase the appeal of extended service commitments.

With 20 of 130 eligible soldiers accepting the offer, the program has seen initial uptake within the unit. The timing leverages the anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI, a title with commercial expectations based on the performance of its predecessor.
