The U.S. Army is planning to phase out the Unmanned Assault Battalion, a unit created last year to study drone warfare and incorporate lessons from the war in Ukraine. An Army official confirmed the plan to phase out the battalion on Thursday.

The Unmanned Assault Battalion is part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade and is currently participating in an exercise scheduled to run through September 2026. An Army official stated that after the exercise, the unit will "refocus on its core warfighting tasks as an airborne infantry battalion." Airborne infantry battalion soldiers are trained to parachute and drop out of aircraft.

Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George and former commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa Gen. Christopher Donahue advocated for the creation of the Unmanned Assault Battalion. Gen. George and Gen. Christopher Donahue were fired or forced to retire early. Former Army Chief of Staff Gen. George and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll launched the Army Transformation Initiative last year, which emphasized unmanned systems.

Gen. Christopher LaNeve is the acting chief of staff of the U.S. Army. He published a document titled "The Army Azimuth" this week outlining his vision for the Army. "Every Soldier deserves to know where this Army is headed and what's expected of them. That's what an azimuth is — clear direction. My focus is simple and it hasn't changed: this Army must fight and win today," Gen. Christopher LaNeve said in a statement.

A spokesperson for Army Secretary Dan Driscoll stated that Driscoll did not have a comment on the drone unit. Retired Army General and former CIA Director David Petraeus offered a contrasting view on military modernization. "In some Western countries right now, they think that innovativeness is giving 50 drones to an armored battalion. No. What we should do is scrap the armored battalions and replace them with a drone battalion," David Petraeus said.

The operational context for these decisions includes recent field activities. A soldier from the U.S. Army piloted a drone in an exercise in Hohenfels, Germany, on April 30, 2026.
