SAN DIEGO — Brandon Glasgo, 30, was arrested Monday morning on suspicion of arson in connection with the Sorrento Fire that erupted Sunday afternoon in San Diego. The blaze spread to 131 acres and triggered evacuation orders before firefighters contained a quarter of the perimeter by the time authorities took Glasgo into custody.
The fire was first reported around 1:30 p.m. between Sorrento Valley Boulevard and Carmel Mountain Road. Flames burned through the Peñasquitos Creek area and swept through Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve just east of Interstate 5.
Glasgo worked as a poker dealer at Jamul Casino Resort prior to his arrest. He is currently being held at San Diego Central Jail on $75,000 bail while awaiting his next court appearance.
Glasgo is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in San Diego Superior Court. The charges stem from the investigation into the cause of the Sunday afternoon fire that threatened nearby residential structures.
The fire triggered evacuation orders and warnings for residents in the immediate vicinity. Authorities also evacuated the nature preserve east of Torrey Pines State Beach to ensure public safety during the active burning.
Authorities shut down streets around the burn area to facilitate emergency response operations. Most evacuation warnings were lifted by Sunday evening as crews gained control over the expanding flame front.
Firefighters initially struggled to reach the flames because the fire burned along a hiking trail. Washouts from a previous fire created further problems for crews trying to reach the area where the vegetation was driest.
"It’s not somewhere you can ride your car into," San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Deputy Chief Dan Eddy said. "Remember, this is a hiking trail, so we had hard access getting our ground units in there. The aircraft were huge for us today in stopping the forward rate of spread." Five fixed-wing aircraft worked the blaze while helicopters operated out of Hemet and Ramona.
Crews managed to halt the fire’s forward spread within about an hour of deploying these assets. By Monday morning, the Sorrento Fire was 25% contained according to situation reports from fire officials. No structural damage or injuries were reported despite the threat to nearby homes.
What's New
Additional reporting confirms the fire erupted just east of Interstate 5, near Sorrento Valley Boulevard. A resident reported spotting Glasgo walking out of an open brushy area in the 10800 block of Vista Sorrento Parkway as flames began spreading.
Glasgo was being held at San Diego Central Jail on $75,000 bail. The fire swept through Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve and authorities evacuated the nature preserve east of Torrey Pines State Beach.
Authorities shut down streets around the burn area to manage traffic and emergency access. No structural damage or injuries were reported following the containment of the wildfire.
Why It Matters
The arrest of Brandon Glasgo marks a development in the investigation of the Sorrento Fire, which threatened structures and required large-scale emergency response. The incident illustrates the challenges firefighters face when wildfires ignite in difficult-to-access terrain such as hiking trails and canyon preserves.
The use of five fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters from Hemet and Ramona demonstrated the resource intensity required to combat fires in urban-wildland interface zones. The fact that no structural damage or injuries occurred reflects the effectiveness of the rapid evacuation orders and the aerial suppression strategy employed by San Diego Fire-Rescue Department crews.
