WINFIELD — Ronald Williams Sr. 53, killed his wife Kelly George and their four children before shooting himself in Winfield, Kansas. The victims were identified as Kelly George, 44; Carol Williams, 9; Ronald Williams Jr. 7; Sarah Williams, 5; and Kelly Magee-Williams, 3.

Officers arrived at the residence and heard a single gunshot before retreating and establishing a perimeter. "At that point, they retreated. There was no other indication of any other loss of life, and so standard protocol was to set up a perimeter and start working the incident as a barricade situation," Winfield Police Chief Robbie DeLong said.

A SWAT team breached the home at approximately 11 a.m. and found six people dead inside. KBI Special Agent in Charge Jason Diaz addressed the sequence of events during a press briefing. "I believe when he called 911 that he was accurate in what he said, and when officers arrived on scene, that final gunshot wound was a self-inflicted one," Diaz said.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation says it is believed that Williams killed his five family members before placing the 911 call and later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound shortly after officers arrived. The investigation is ongoing, and the KBI says no further information will be released at this time.

"In my 20-plus years here, no, I can’t remember anything remotely close to this," DeLong said. He also sought to reassure residents regarding public safety.

"I want to make something very clear to the community. This was an isolated incident. There is no ongoing threat," DeLong said.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has not determined a motive for the shootings. Police had received reports of Williams exhibiting aggressive behavior, including confronting and yelling at people in public, in the weeks prior to the shooting. Officers had previously responded to the area of the family’s home based on reports of gunfire but had not been able to identify the source.
