Ryder Williams saved 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai from drowning at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, California. The incident took place on July 25, 2026, when Nathaniel Rai lost his footing and was pulled into the Pacific Ocean by powerful swells.

Ryder Williams used a rescue tube to dive into a wave, grab Nathaniel Rai, and maintain his grip until another lifeguard assisted. Lifeguard Aaron Bohnen assisted Ryder Williams in bringing Nathaniel Rai back to shore safely after bystanders attempted to help but retreated due to the strong surf.

Local photographer Scott Vander Dussen recorded video of the rescue, which captured the intensity of the heavy surf conditions. The National Weather Service had warned of perilous waves and rip currents associated with faraway tropical cyclones on the weekend of the rescue.

Sumit Rai stated that his son recalled momentarily losing consciousness during the incident. "What he did, I can never repay," Sumit Rai said. "I’m forever grateful."

Ryder Williams is employed by California State Parks as a seasonal lifeguard. On the day he saved Nathaniel Rai, Ryder Williams made four additional rescues, completing five rescues during his shift. California State Parks recognized him for his actions, which were shared globally on social media.

"This is not an uncommon occurrence," Ryder Williams said in a video released by California State Parks on July 31. "This is our job. This is what we’re here to do – and the reason we’re here." He added that it is awesome to get to come out and help people every day.
