GERMANTOWN, MD — One adult male was killed and seven juveniles were injured in a two-vehicle crash in Germantown, Maryland. The collision occurred at the intersection of Great Seneca Highway and Clopper Road just before 5:30 a.m.

The crash involved a Kia Optima and a Toyota Matrix. The driver of the Toyota Matrix was pronounced dead at the scene. Montgomery County Police have not released the identity of the deceased driver.

The Kia Optima struck the Toyota Matrix. The Kia was carrying seven children ages 12 to 15. Seven juveniles were injured in the crash.

Five children suffered injuries of varying severity and were transported to several area trauma centers. Another occupant of the Kia remained in critical condition. The juvenile driving the Kia was listed in critical but stable condition.

Dozens of first responders responded to the scene. Five ambulances, five medic units and four engines were on the scene. Passengers were trapped inside both cars.

Two people were trapped inside a vehicle and rescued. First responders managed to get everyone out of the cars. One vehicle flipped and caught fire. Firefighters put out a small fire on the overturned car.

Pete Piringer, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman, said in an interview that officials called it a “mass casualty” incident because of the number of those injured. The intersection of Clopper Road and Great Seneca Highway remains closed to vehicle traffic. Great Seneca Highway is a state highway in Montgomery County, Maryland. The Toyota Matrix is a compact hatchback vehicle made by Toyota.
