KYIV — A Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv killed nine people and injured more than 30 others early on August 1, 2026. The strike prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to renew appeals for air defense systems while U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington had not agreed to transfer advanced interceptor technology.

Explosions occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time as the bombardment hit five districts of Kyiv. Vitali Klitschko, the mayor of Kyiv, said in a social media post: "This was a horrific night for Kyiv." Damage was recorded in seven districts across Kyiv, according to the Prosecutor General's Office.

Zelenskyy stated the attack included 35 missiles and 185 attack drones. He specified that 27 of the missiles were ballistic missiles. Only one of those 27 ballistic missiles was intercepted due to a shortage of Patriot air defense interceptors, Zelenskyy stated.

Seven people died and 14 were injured in the Darnytskyi district, according to Ukraine's state emergency service. Two people died in the Solomianskyi district after falling debris and a fire damaged a five-story apartment building. Rescue crews pulled 35 residents from the upper floors of the damaged building in the Solomianskyi district.

Children were among the injured in the Solomianskyi district. Four children suffered multiple shrapnel wounds and lacerations, according to Ukrainian prosecutors. Firefighters halted a blaze in a non-residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district. Officials reported damage to commercial and residential property in two additional districts of Kyiv.

He stated that Ukrainian drones struck three oil refineries overnight in Russia's Bashkortostan region. He also stated that a sanctioned Russian container ship was sunk in the Black Sea following a Ukrainian drone strike. Rosatom stated the sunk vessel was carrying frozen food and construction materials.

Zelenskyy met with President Trump at the White House on Tuesday. During that visit, Zelenskyy held talks with executives at Lockheed Martin. Germany and Japan are the only countries besides the United States with permission to produce Patriot missiles.
