LAKE TAHOE — The Washoe County Sheriff's Office identified the drowning victim as Yadessa Emiru Aga, 32, of Austin, Texas. Authorities are investigating the death as an accidental drowning.

Deputies responded to reports of a water rescue at the North Sand Harbor boat ramp in Nevada around 8 p.m. on July 28, 2026. Yadessa Emiru Aga had swum toward offshore boulders before becoming unresponsive.

Bystanders pulled Yadessa Emiru Aga out of the water and brought him to shore before deputies arrived. "Despite those efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased at the scene," the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Yadessa Emiru Aga worked as a software engineer for Amazon. He was visiting friends in Lake Tahoe after returning from a church conference. Austin is capital city of the U.S. state of Texas and seat of Travis County.

The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office stated the official cause of death has not yet been determined pending further investigation. Justin Norton, operations manager for the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, addressed the status of the case in an email. "The case is pending further investigation, so I have no records or cause of death to release at this time," Justin Norton said in an email.

The incident shows the ongoing risks associated with recreational water activities in natural bodies of water such as Lake Tahoe. The response involved both civilian bystanders and law enforcement deputies, illustrating the immediate community effort to assist individuals in distress before official personnel could intervene.

The distinction between the initial investigation classification and the final medical determination remains a procedural step in such cases. While authorities have classified the event as an accidental drowning, the medical examiner’s office maintains that the official cause of death requires further investigation before being finalized. This process ensures that all available evidence is reviewed before a definitive conclusion is recorded.
