Rep. Jamie Raskin announced that Fifa would face a congressional investigation into its financial and political ties to Donald Trump and his family if Democrats reclaim the House of Representatives in November. The Maryland Democrat stated he would make Fifa an early target of scrutiny if he becomes chair of the House Judiciary Committee under a Democratic House majority.

He, the ranking member of the House Committee on the Judiciary, accused Fifa of embedding itself in a pattern of corruption surrounding the Trump administration and the Kushner family. He characterized the organization's recent activities as a large-scale scheme following its proposal to privatize its commercial operations.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino proposed spinning off the organization’s commercial business into a standalone company valued at approximately $20 billion. JPMorgan Chase is leading the fundraising effort for Fifa's commercial spin-off, according to reports.

Thrive Eternal, an investment vehicle linked to Thrive Capital founder Joshua Kushner, is among the prospective investors in Fifa's commercial spin-off. Joshua Kushner is the brother of Jared Kushner, who is Donald Trump’s son-in-law and a high-level White House adviser.

"Fifa appears to have struck a several hundred-billion-dollar deal orchestrated by Jared Kushner’s brother and JPMorgan to privatize Fifa’s business operations so private equity, hedge funds, autocrats, kleptocrats and large investors can come to own and control the world’s most beautiful game," he said in a statement.

Over the last few weeks, Fifa’s cozy relationship to Donald Trump has been floating to the top of the swamp of quid pro quo corruption in which the Trump Administration is swimming. But now we see where all the bribes, kickbacks and sweetheart deals have been leading," he added."

He stated that if Democrats take control of the House, the Judiciary Committee would have the authority to compel testimony and documents from Fifa, JPMorgan, and entities connected to the Kushner family’s investment vehicles. Democrats currently lack the legal power to compel witnesses to appear in the House of Representatives due to the Republican majority.

"Fifa needs to cooperate in good faith now. If and when Democrats take the House, this Committee will have the tools we need to get answers, expose corruption, protect sports fans against exorbitant and fraudulent charges and block this attempt to turn world soccer into a global financial shakedown," he said.

The minority members of the House Judiciary Committee, under Raskin, have requested records from Fifa. The requested records include documents related to gifts provided to Donald Trump, communications with the Department of Justice, and visitor logs for Fifa’s Miami headquarters and its Trump Tower office.

The White House has dismissed allegations regarding Fifa's ties to the Trump administration as politically motivated. The US Department of Justice dropped long-running bribery and money-laundering cases tied to the Fifa corruption scandal, stating the cases no longer fit the administration’s enforcement priorities.

Uefa voted to boycott the World Cup if Fifa proceeds with its commercial sell-off plans. Uefa stated that "none of us are the owners of football" in an official statement regarding the proposed restructuring.

Uefa accused Fifa of undermining the integrity of the 2026 World Cup after officials reversed a red card issued to US forward Folarin Balogun. The reversal of Folarin Balogun's red card occurred following a call from Donald Trump to Gianni Infantino.

"The United States is set to host the Women’s World Cup in 2031, and we have a responsibility to ensure Fifa will not again bring its own brand of corrupt pay-to-play politics and exploitation onto our soil," he said. The United States is scheduled to host the Women’s World Cup in 2031.

The potential investigation shows concerns over the intersection of international sports governance, private equity, and political influence in the United States. If Democrats regain the House majority, the Judiciary Committee would possess the subpoena power necessary to examine financial ties between Fifa, JPMorgan, and investment vehicles linked to the Kushner family.

The controversy extends beyond financial arrangements to questions of sporting integrity, as evidenced by Uefa's boycott threat and its accusations regarding officiating decisions during the 2026 World Cup.
