LOS ANGELES — BTS announced on Wednesday that they will not submit music for consideration for the 2027 Grammy Awards. The K-pop group stated that it hopes music will be heard and loved without being distinguished by region or language.

All seven BTS members—RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—posted the same statement on their individual Instagram accounts. "We have decided not to enter the Grammys this year. I hope music itself can be heard and loved rather than being distinguished by region or language," the group wrote. "We thank Army and everyone who has always stood by us."

Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said he was saddened by BTS's decision but respects and understands it. He issued a clarification regarding the intent behind the new category. "I do want to clarify something that seems to be getting lost in the conversation. The Asian Pop category was created to celebrate the depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia. The spirit of this new category is to shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists. More categories mean more artists’ work is recognized. It’s never to divide, but to expand who is recognized by our 15,000 Grammy voters." Mason Jr. stated that submitting music in a genre category such as Asian Pop does not exclude artists from submitting and being considered in general categories including Record of the Year, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year.

The Grammy Awards is an American award for achievements in music. BTS has received five Grammy nominations but has never won a Grammy Award. BTS was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance in 2021 for the song 'Dynamite.' The group was also nominated for Album of the Year in 2023 as featured artists on Coldplay’s album 'Music of the Spheres.'

All seven BTS members have been voting members of the Recording Academy since 2019. The group debuted in 2013 and went on hiatus in 2022 as members pursued solo projects and enlisted for mandatory military service in South Korea. BTS ended their hiatus in March 2026 with a live concert in Seoul.

Around that same time, the group released the album 'Arirang' in March 2026. The album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200. The lead single from 'Arirang' is titled 'Swim,' which debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Prior to the Grammy announcement, BTS performed at the FIFA World Cup 2026 Final Halftime Show on July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. During the performance, the group performed the song 'Dynamite.' The World Tour Arirang included a European leg that concluded in Paris with approximately 720,000 total attendees. BTS is set to resume the World Tour Arirang U.S. leg starting Aug.

"The Grammys was one of the goals that we haven’t really gotten in the past. But I think now, the most important thing is just that we are here back together again; we’re going to see the fans all over the world."

The Recording Academy announced four additional categories for the 2027 Grammys: Best Latin Song, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, and Best Traditional Folk Album. Online entry for the 2027 Grammy Awards opened on July 7, 2026, and closes on Aug. 21, 2026.

First round voting for the 2027 Grammy Awards will begin on Oct. 12, 2026. The official announcement of nominees for the 2027 Grammy Awards will be on Nov. 16, 2026. The 69th Grammy Awards ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 7, 2027. The 2027 Grammy Awards will air live on ABC, Disney+, and Hulu.
