TEXAS PANHANDLE — A 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the Texas panhandle on a Thursday at approximately 5:21 a.m. No injuries or deaths were reported following the seismic event, which marks the strongest quake to hit the region since 1900.
The United States Geological Survey determined the earthquake occurred at a depth of 3.5 miles (5.7 km). The agency located the epicenter approximately 27.8 miles south-east of Spearman, Texas, and about 68 miles from Amarillo, Texas.
Residents across the panhandle and into neighboring states reported feeling the tremors. A resident in Pampa, Texas, stated they were awakened by a thunder-like rumble and shaking around 5:20 a.m. In Mobeetie, Texas, a resident reported the shaking lasted about 20 seconds and caused a picture to fall off a shelf.
In White Deer, Texas, residents reported feeling the earthquake. One White Deer resident described the physical impact of the tremors. 'I was standing, and it threw me way off balance,' the resident stated.
The sensation of the quake extended beyond Texas borders. Residents in western Oklahoma felt the tremors, as did residents in south-western Kansas. The USGS noted that the population in this region resides in structures that are resistant to earthquake shaking, though vulnerable structures exist.
The agency further identified specific construction risks in its assessment. 'The predominant vulnerable building types are unreinforced brick masonry and reinforced masonry construction,' the USGS stated.
This event stands out in the historical seismic record for the area. The Texas Panhandle experienced a magnitude 5.4 earthquake on July 30, 1925, which remains the largest known earthquake in the region's history prior to this 2026 event. Since 1907, 91% of documented Texas Panhandle earthquakes have measured below magnitude 5.0 on the Richter Scale, with only three events measuring 5.0 or greater recorded.
The Texas Seismological Network catalog documents 374 earthquakes in the Panhandle between 1907 and 2018. Of those recorded events, 89% occurred at depths of less than 5 km. A magnitude 5.0 earthquake in the Delaware Basin on March 26, 2020, was previously the largest induced earthquake in Texas.
Historical reports have examined potential links between seismic activity and industrial operations in the state. A 1936 magnitude 5.0 earthquake in the Panhandle was cited in a 1982 University of Texas report as potentially linked to oil production activities, though the evidence remains inconclusive.
The rarity of a magnitude 5.0 earthquake in the Texas panhandle draws attention to the region's seismic profile, where the vast majority of recorded quakes are significantly weaker. With only three events of this magnitude or greater since 1907, infrastructure and residents are less accustomed to such shaking compared to more seismically active zones. The USGS assessment of local building vulnerability provides context for potential damage risks, particularly for older masonry structures, even as the overall population resides in more resistant buildings.
