HAMILTON COUNTY — Democrat Mark Herndon is challenging incumbent Hamilton County Mayor Weston Wamp for the seat. Herndon raised over $45,000 for his campaign during the reporting periods.

Wamp, the sitting Hamilton County Mayor, began the campaign cycle with a substantial financial advantage. Records show Wamp started with $469,188 in campaign funds. In the most recent reporting period, Wamp raised an additional amount. His campaign reported spending $77,570 as of that recent report.

Herndon’s fundraising occurred across two distinct reporting periods. He collected $5,530 in the first period. The second period saw a significant increase, with Herndon raising $40,083. The candidate reported spending $9,103 on his campaign efforts during this time.

The challenger has faced financial obligations outside the campaign trail. Records from the Hamilton County Trustee indicate Herndon owes $794.92 in property taxes for 2025. He also owes $1,082.46 for 2024.

Herndon’s public advocacy emerged following a personal tragedy. His son, Silas, died by suicide in August 2025. This event led Herndon to become an advocate for mental health services in Hamilton County schools.

Earlier in the year, Herndon sent text messages to Hamilton County School Board members in October 2025. The messages included a reference to lynching. School Board Chairman Joe Smith later described the communications as deeply concerning.

Wamp has held the mayoral office since 2022. He won the August 4, 2022 Hamilton County mayoral election with 57.9% of the vote. Wamp is the son of former U.S. Representative Zach Wamp.
