KAMPALA — A man killed four children in a machete attack inside a nursery school in Kampala, according to a police statement. The attacker gained access to the Gaba Early Childhood Development Program in Kampala by disguising himself as a parent.

The man entered the offices of the Gaba Early Childhood Development Program and briefly engaged the administrator in charge. He then stepped outside and locked the school gate before beginning to attack the children.

Video footage aired by a local broadcaster showed some parents weeping. Police fired in the air to disperse a crowd that gathered near the school and appeared to be trying to lynch the suspect.

The suspect was taken into custody, according to police spokesman Kituuma Rusoke. A motive for the attack is unknown, Rusoke said.

Kampala has a population of roughly 3 million people.
