HOUSTON — The Texas Department of Transportation is launching Operation Slowdown from July 18 through August 2, 2026. The statewide traffic enforcement campaign aims to reduce speed-related crashes and save lives.

Operation Slowdown is part of TxDOT’s broader “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” initiative. During the two-week period, law enforcement agencies across Texas will increase patrols on roadways. Officers will spend more time visibly patrolling to encourage motorists to slow down and will issue citations to drivers who exceed posted speed limits.

TxDOT cited data showing the severe consequences of speeding in 2025, when it contributed to more than 150,000 crashes statewide. Those crashes resulted in 1,247 deaths and 5,652 serious injuries, according to the agency. TxDOT states that driving too fast makes it harder to stop in time to avoid a crash and increases the likelihood that a collision will lead to severe injuries or fatalities.

In addition to enforcement, TxDOT is promoting safe driving behaviors. The agency encourages drivers to adjust their speed based on traffic, weather, and road conditions. It also recommends leaving extra following distance, especially during heavy traffic or on wet roads. Drivers are urged to watch for changing speed limits, particularly in construction zones and school zones, where speeding fines are doubled.

TxDOT also encourages all vehicle occupants to buckle up on every trip, whether as a driver or a passenger. “Speeding not only endangers the driver but everyone on the road,” a TxDOT statement said. “Slowing down gives you more time to react and can be the difference between a close call and a tragedy.”

Speeding remains a leading factor in traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Texas, with enforcement campaigns like Operation Slowdown designed to curb dangerous driving behaviors during high-risk periods. The initiative aligns with TxDOT’s ongoing “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” messaging, which emphasizes practical steps drivers can take to reduce crash risks.
