DETROIT — A fire broke out on the 11th floor of the historic Maccabees Building in Detroit on Wednesday, prompting the evacuation of the Wayne State University-owned structure. The fire was contained, according to Wayne State on social media.

No injuries were reported, Wayne State said on social media. Officials said the fire likely began in the heating and cooling system.

Video from TV stations showed clouds of black smoke near the top of the 14-story Maccabees Building along Woodward Avenue, just north of downtown Detroit. The building houses offices of the Wayne State Computer Science Department and African American Studies.

Wayne State has owned the Maccabees Building for more than 20 years. The nearly century-old building was designed by architect Albert Kahn.

In the 1930s, the Maccabees Building housed early radio and television studios. The building hosted radio broadcasts of "The Lone Ranger" and "The Green Hornet" starting in the 1930s.
