This mission marks Anil Menon’s first space flight. A physician and former flight surgeon for both NASA and SpaceX, Menon was selected to join the NASA astronaut corps in 2021. For Roscosmos astronauts Dubrov and Kikina, this is their second space flight. Their prior experience includes time aboard the station during earlier long-duration expeditions.

Menon spoke extensively about the personal significance of his flight, particularly in light of his wife Anna Menon’s own spaceflight history. Reflecting on their parallel paths, Anil Menon said, “In terms of me and Anna, I would say there was a zero percent chance we thought this would happen, but it does go to show that if you keep working at something, you should never count yourself out.” He added, “It also goes to show that if you're interested in being a part of NASA, going to space, there are a lot of different ways this could work out.”

Menon described the emotional complexity of being the spouse on the ground during his wife’s flight and how that experience shaped his own preparation. “When I talk about what it was like for her to launch and me to be on the ground, I think that was the harder job, and I found it really stressful,” he said. “I was worried about her and the kids, and there were certain challenges related to that.” He noted that Anna’s experience gave him valuable insight: “She's got insight into what that's like (to fly in space) and what the launch might be like, and how to make it meaningful.” Menon said they had discussed their shared situation extensively and added, “I think, like, either side of this, my side and her side, hopefully we're better off, and we understand each other a bit better.”

Looking ahead to his time on the station, Menon expressed openness to the extended duration. “We always walk into these missions somewhat prepared for any length of time,” he said before launch. “So I'm going into this willing and excited to spend more time there.” The eight-month stay aligns with a Roscosmos strategy to lengthen crew rotations to reduce cargo requirements for resupply missions.

Menon also shared more personal reflections about staying connected with his young children during the mission. “I'm looking for ways to connect with them, because when I Facetime with them, they would give me about five seconds of attention, and then they quickly start playing random things or messing with the phone,” he said. To bridge that gap, he plans to bring small reminders from home: “So I'm bringing up some toys, some Lego figurines that will remind me of them, and maybe I can keep them engaged for 10 seconds.” He concluded with a note of optimism: “We'll see.”

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman attended the launch, marking the first visit to Baikonur by a NASA administrator in eight years. On July 13, 2026, Isaacman met with the Soyuz MS-29 crew, and on launch day, he held discussions with Roscosmos head Dmitry Bakanov and Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov. The talks with Manturov included prospective cooperation on the International Space Station and other projects.

Isaacman praised the joint effort behind the mission, saying, “The integrated work performed over the past several months reflects the professionalism and dedication of everyone involved.” His presence the ongoing operational partnership between NASA and Roscosmos, despite broader geopolitical tensions.

This collaboration is formalized under a longstanding agreement requiring at least one NASA astronaut to fly on each Soyuz mission and one Roscosmos cosmonaut on each SpaceX Crew Dragon flight. U.S. and Russian crews have continued to exchange seats and support joint operations aboard the International Space Station since 2022, even after Moscow sent troops into Ukraine that year. However, plans for broader cooperation—including potential Russian participation in NASA’s Artemis program—have ended. Meanwhile, Roscosmos has begun cooperating with China on its prospective lunar mission.
