CHATTANOOGA — Jack Peterson was fired from his position as a part-time Incline Railway conductor after making remarks to passengers on July 4, 2026. The comments, made during an Independence Day ride on the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway in Chattanooga, Tennessee, prompted swift action from officials and widespread public reaction.

Peterson told passengers, "To the very, very few Americans in here, Happy Independence Day." He added, "To the rest of you, welcome to the greatest country on the face of this planet, and, if you disagree, you can leave." A video of the incident circulated on TikTok, drawing attention to the exchange.

CARTA officials stated that the remarks were unacceptable and did not reflect the values of CARTA, the Incline Railway, or its employees. Peterson had been identified as a new, seasonal employee at the time of the incident.

Following his termination, Peterson launched a GoFundMe campaign with a $24,000 goal. As of July 14, 2026, the fundraiser had raised over $18,000. In the campaign description, Peterson stated, "I'm Jack Peterson the conductor that was recently fired for my patriotic statements at the incline railway." He added, "Im starting this because of the support and comments from people wanting to donate to my cause."

Peterson outlined how the funds would be used, saying, "These funds will solely go to me to help during this hard time." He explained, "It will allow me to pay bills, insurance, and rent while I try to find a new job." He also noted, "I will not be using this money for my legal fees."

Expressing gratitude to donors, Peterson wrote, "Anything is welcome, we all work hard for our money so I truly understand." He concluded, "Thank yall again for all the support regardless of if you donate or not." CARTA’s CEO has planned to meet with Peterson to discuss the impact of his remarks and potential reemployment.
