ALBUQUERQUE — By late June 2026, escalating wildfire activity prompted the National Interagency Fire Center to raise the national preparedness level to 4, signaling a significant escalation in the U.S. wildfire response. More than 5,600 square miles have burned nationwide so far this year, and over 2,000 fires have been confirmed since the beginning of July alone.
The U.S. Wildland Fire Service strategy prioritizes pre-positioning crews, engines, and aircraft in areas with the highest likelihood of wildfire activity. Pre-positioning resources allows for quicker initial attack when new wildfires ignite, which is often the most effective way to keep fires small. Firefighters are currently directed to attack every blaze as quickly as possible to limit growth—a shift that reverses a decades-long trend in which fire managers sometimes allowed blazes to burn in order to clear brush and dead vegetation.
As of Monday, July 13, 2026, 16 incident management teams were overseeing nearly 17,000 personnel across more than a dozen states. The Babylon Fire in Utah is the largest active blaze in the U.S., having consumed 166 square miles. The total area burned in 2026 already exceeds the combined size of Yellowstone and Grand Canyon national parks. Fire outlooks show above-normal wildfire potential in July from the Four Corners Region northward through Oregon, Idaho, and Washington, and this elevated risk is not expected to decrease until September 2026.
Tragedy has marked the fire season. Three firefighters were killed battling flames in Colorado, and a helicopter assisting with a Colorado fire crashed into a reservoir, killing the pilot. Recent fires have also forced the evacuation of some lookout towers in the state. Mike Morgan, director of the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, addressed the situation during a news conference in early July. “Thank God that they have the ability to free those resources up,” Morgan said. He added, “So I think at the moment I would say I feel pretty good about where we’re at. But I’m very concerned about where we go.”
Camille Stevens-Rumann, a former wildland firefighter and associate professor at Colorado State University, emphasized the challenges posed by persistent extreme conditions. “More experience is critical when dealing with extreme conditions,” she said. “They can be available for when those conditions die down, like in the evening. But when we have day after day of red flag warnings and high winds, it’s really hard to control a fire.” Stevens-Rumann also reflected on the emotional weight of fighting fires close to home: “There’s no denying it. It’s easy to disassociate that when you’re on a fire crew and you’re arriving to a place that you don’t have a connection to per se to fight a fire. You know, you’re there to do a job. But when you see it in your own backyard, it’s definitely a totally different experience.” She also noted the futility of certain tactics under current conditions: “It doesn’t do us any good to build miles and miles of line that just get burnt over, over and over again.”
Christopher Dunn, an assistant professor of wildfire risk science at Oregon State University, highlighted the strain on national response systems. “So there is sort of this delicate balance that has to be walked there, where you share, they share, everybody shares,” Dunn said. “And everybody benefits from that sharing while not overextending your resources so much that you find yourself in a losing position.” He warned of growing fatigue among personnel: “With all this sharing and all of this increase in fire everywhere, we’re just going to see increased pressure on them to work more and work harder and essentially burn out quicker.”
The National Interagency Fire Center sets preparedness levels from 1 to 5 based on fire activity, resource demands, weather, and ground conditions. Level 4 indicates that wildfire activity is severe enough to require substantial mobilization of national resources. While the top preparedness tier—level 5—has not yet been reached in 2026, historical data shows that over the past decade, U.S. fire managers have reached that highest level an average of 25 days per year. The longest continuous stretch at level 5 occurred in 2021, and the earliest the top designation has ever been issued was on June 21, 2002.
The U.S. wildfire response is coordinated through 10 geographic area coordination centers that manage the mobilization of firefighters and equipment. This system supports the strategic deployment of federal, state, local, and tribal resources. In some areas, fire detection still relies on a network of lookout towers. There are approximately 350 lookout towers left in the U.S., many staffed by volunteers due to dwindling budgets. Lookout towers remain in active use in Pennsylvania, Maine, and other eastern states. New Jersey opened a new lookout tower in 2026, while recent fires in Colorado have forced evacuations from others.
