THE WOODLANDS — A baby was anonymously surrendered at a Safe Haven Baby Box installed at The Woodlands Fire Department Station 6 on July 13, 2026. The infant was transported to a hospital for medical evaluation following the surrender.

The climate-controlled box is designed so that placing a baby inside triggers a silent alarm that alerts firefighters. The system functions under the Texas Safe Haven Law, which permits the anonymous and legal surrender of newborns at designated safe locations.

Fire Chief Palmer Buck said the box fulfilled its purpose in this instance. "This Safe Haven Baby Box exists for moments exactly like this," Buck said. He added, "Today, a baby is safe because someone chose a secure and legal option during what was undoubtedly a difficult situation."

The installation of the box at Station 6 was completed in April 2025 after approval by The Woodlands Township Board of Directors. The project was carried out in partnership with Safe Haven Baby Boxes, Inc., a nonprofit organization that supports the deployment of such devices.

The Woodlands Township Chairman Brad Bailey praised the outcome and the collaboration behind the initiative. "The Safe Haven Baby Box provides a compassionate option that protects the health and safety of babies while offering hope during a crisis," Bailey said. He also stated, "We are thankful this baby is safe and commend the Fire Department for its commitment to providing this lifesaving resource to our community."
