FAIRFIELD — The Fairfield Police Department and U.S. Marshals arrested a 17-year-old male suspect on July 10 at a residence in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas. The arrest relates to the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Jamario Baker during a June 3 incident in Fairfield, California, that also injured three others and disrupted a high school commencement ceremony.

The shooting occurred at 7:15 p.m. in a parking lot shared by Fairfield High School and Sem Yeto High School, immediately following the Sem Yeto High School commencement ceremony. Approximately 1,000 people had attended the event. Jamario Baker was wearing his graduation gown at the time of the shooting and was fatally wounded. Three other individuals—aged 11, 20, and 25—were also shot but sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were hospitalized.

Baker’s grandmother stated that he was attempting to shield his 11-year-old sister, who was among those injured. Police initially indicated they believed the shooting was targeted but did not specify the intended target. Details regarding the motive or whether the suspect knew the victims have not been released.

The suspect fled California to Texas days after the June 3 shooting. Authorities have not released his identity because he is under the age of 18. He is being held on suspicion of murder and related offenses and will remain in custody in Texas pending extradition to Solano County.

The Fairfield Police Department stated, "This arrest represents a significant milestone in an investigation that has required hundreds of hours of investigative work and the coordinated efforts of numerous law enforcement professionals." The department added, "Investigators conducted dozens of witness interviews, reviewed hours of surveillance and digital video, analyzed photographs and electronic records, executed search warrants, processed forensic evidence, and coordinated efforts across multiple jurisdictions to develop a comprehensive and prosecutable case."

The Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District released a statement expressing gratitude for the work of law enforcement. The district stated, "Our hearts remain with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and all those whose lives are forever changed by this violence." It also said, "While today’s announcement may provide a measure of relief to some, it does not lessen the pain felt by our community." Fairfield High School relocated its graduation ceremony following the fatal shooting.

The arrest concludes a month-long manhunt that spanned multiple states and involved federal and local law enforcement collaboration. The shooting disrupted a milestone community event—the high school commencement—and left four people wounded, one fatally, in a location typically associated with celebration and safety.
